Centro Sociale Ex-Horus Club Flushed Out
As part of right wing Rome mayor Gianni Alemanno’s city “clean up,” the left wing centro sociale Ex-Horus was shut down by police earlier in the week. The club is just down the road from my house and has been occupied for the past year or so. I went there last year for an aperitivo after getting curious. After all, the building had been shuttered since I’d moved to the neighborhood and I was curious. From the photos in the paper, it looked like there was quite a commotion, but I didn’t hear anything until my colleague P read about it in the paper the next day. Let’s hope this trend does not continue, as centri sociali are one of the more interesting spaces to go out in Rome and often host some of the most progressive musical acts, exhibitions, and cinema in the city. I also have serious doubts as to whether this isn’t more than just an attempt to get rid of the left wing social centers while leaving the right wing spaces unscathed. Tonight I walked over and took some photos, there were banners hanging next door in protest of the shutdown and some kids gathered on the balcony, so I have no doubt things will regroup, whether or not it’s in Horus or somewhere else.
For those of you who read Italian, there’s an interesting article on the history of centri sociali in Rome from Il Repubblica. Check it out here.
