Monicelli e Monti
Tonight there was a screening of Mario Monicelli‘s documentary Vicino al Colosseo…c’e’ Monti, which chronicles the history of the neighborhood in which he lives (and where I work). I must admit to being a complete novice in Italian film, so I had no idea who Monicelli was except for P’s hushed whispering to me when we’d see him in the bar or at Al Vino Al Vino that he was a very famous director. In fact, he’s been nominated for several Oscars and worked with all the top Italian actors and actresses of the 50s, 60s, and 70s. One look at his listing on IMDB tells you that this man is serious business and is amazingly prolific at the age of 93.
All this week throughout Monti there have been posters advertising the event and as usual, the tight knit community of Monti was out in force in the piazza for the screening. Unfortunately the weather was not cooperating, so P and I stayed for a bit to do some people watching and then headed home before the downpour started. Luckily P’s mom bought a copy of the documentary with the local newspaper today so we can have a screening of our own.
By the way, how cute is the old man in the track suit???
