via Crucis

Posted on Apr 11, 2009 | 2 comments

Rome is in full swing with Holy Week and last night, on Good Friday, the Pope presided over the annual via Crucis procession by the Colosseum. These photos are NOT from that event, but rather from a small neighborhood version of the via Crucis performed in the Pigneto area last night. I was there at a friend’s house and it turned out that her apartment was designated as one of the stations, so we watched out the window and I got these shots. As you can see it drew quite a crowd, so you can only imagine what the large event looked like. I think especially in this moment with all the tragedy of the earthquake, many are turning to prayer for solace.

  1. One of the things I’ve always missed after moving to the states is how Easter is celebrated in Europe. I remember beautiful floats covered with flowers processing down the streets. Do they do that in Italy too?

  2. beautiful photos-wish I was there and yes people find religion when times are tough
