A quick 40 minute train ride out of Rome (toward Albano) and you come upon Castel Gandolfo, mostly known because it’s the historic summer home of the Pope and they still conduct Papal Audience’s there in August. Today I didn’t go in search of the Pope, but to enjoy a little time at the lake with a good friend who will soon be leaving Rome. I’m not a big lake person to be honest after growing up swimming in the ocean, but it was a nice change of pace. Once you get off the train it’s about a 10 minute walk downhill to the lake and you can choose from different docks. Be warned! The shallow part of the lake has extremely soft and deep mud so you can’t just walk in. And yes, this comes from me not thinking that everyone was swimming in a certain area and then getting stuck for a minute in knee high mud that ended up cutting my legs 🙁 However! Apart from that it was a beautiful day and we took a paddle boat out to the middle of the lake (not far from the pontoon in this photo) and lounging and jumped into the water (no mud situation if you do this). It’s not quite the ocean, but it was nice to be surrounded by some nature for a change. I just hope my legs don’t get scars!
Oh yeah….another good part is that the train is just €1.90 each way!
