Trajan’s Column

Posted on Aug 5, 2009 | 10 comments

I’ve always loved Trajan’s Column since studying it in high school and then college art history classes. The amazing bas relief is a continuous narrative that spirals around the column, recounting Trajan’s victory over the Dacian’s. It’s a type of story telling that was the first of its kind. Of course the pope’s eventually plopped a statue of St. Peter’s on the top, but if that saved it from destruction, so be it. Stop by Piazza Venezia to check it out.

Oh and if you have a chance today, stop by JM’s great Oeiras and environs daily photo blog. He’s one year old today and was one of the first frequent visitors to my blog. Happy anniversary!

  6. Hahah, I'm so ignorant of stuff. My friend and I came across this pillar and thought it looked cool. We didn't know much of its significance, but we still took pictures next to it. And now I'm glad we (accidentally) did!

  7. Hi guys, so yet again another case of me not knowing if I liked this photo enough and everyone else loving it! Haha, I guess when I get that feeling I should know it's a good photo.
