It’s Been a Long Day

Posted on Sep 27, 2009 | 5 comments

This shot was taken just outside of Santa Maria Maggiore probably at about 6 pm. I loved this couple sitting on the steps, probably at the end of a long day of sight seeing. She’s resting her head on his should as he looks at the map to figure out where to go next. It’s a site I see often here. The kind of glazed over end of the day look that tourists get after trying to cram in thousands of years of history and monuments in one day. Rome can be overwhelming in that sense and I think people don’t plan well enough for the toll it can really take on you.

  1. I know how they feel. Siteseeing is the most tiring "work" I've ever done, that's for sure!

  2. We've made the same mistake on our first trip to Rome. All well made plans went out the window when we arrived. So much to see…you mind explodes, you lose all sense of control and you try to see it all. resulting in exhaustion, sore feet and a sense of – I saw a lot, but I really didn't see anything.

Reflecting on our trip now…I feel in love with Rome.

  3. Exactly how I felt on my 1st trip to Rome. What a beautiful, overwhelming city. I can't wait to go back!

  4. Beautiful blog!complimenti

  5. Peter – Haha, it can be work! Sometimes you might even need a vacation from your vacation.

Kevin – I totally know what you mean about seeing everything but really "seeing" it. That's how I felt after my frist trip to Italy. I was amazing, but there was so much that later I couldn't remember what I actually saw and what I'd just read about.

    Ren – Grazie mille!
