Mary Magdalene by Donatello

I was in Florence not long ago and visited the Museo dell’Opera del Duomo for the first time since I was 16 years old. Besides being impressed by how they’ve really revamped the interior, I forgot that it housed the Mary Magdalene sculpture by Donatello. It’s a piece I’d really forgotten about until I stepped into the room and was so excited to see it. Carved out of wood, the dramatic piece really takes your breath away. Her sunken cheeks and loose flesh are rendered with amazing accuracy and reminded me of why Donatello was truly the master sculpture of the early Renaissance.
