On a day like today, which is around 104 degrees Fahrenheit in Rome, all I can dream about is a delicious grattachecca to keep me cool. What am I talking about exactly? This good article pretty much spells it out, but we’re talking about shaved ice flavored with different syrups and sometimes fruit slices. There used to be stands and kiosks all over the city, but they’ve been whittled down to just a few, most famously the Sora Mirella stand by the Tiber Island. The one is this picture is in Testaccio, sadly there are none near me in Pigneto so I’ll have to figure out something else to keep me cool. For another perspective on grattachecca, check out Erica’s post on the Nile Guide.

  1. I had this when I was on my way back to Rome from a day trip to Trastevere
last Summer. It was very hot that day & the ice was a delicious treat!
