# (Cancelletto) – Return of the Carp

Posted on Aug 22, 2010 | 1 comment

Even before I started photographing street art in Rome, I’d seen images around the city of colorful Japanese-style carps. Having a fascination with Eastern culture, I fell in love with them right away and then eventually discovered that it was # (Cancelletto) was responsible for the posters. Over the past year or so he hasn’t really painted many of them, instead favoring images of strange, part man/part animal creatures or faces with body parts transposed in different places. I can definitely understand the desire to stretch because otherwise, as an artist, you can get bored, but I was so happy to see this “return of the carp” pasted up in Pigneto the other week. In the close up photo you can see the colorful washes used on thin paper to create the delicate, undulating fish. I hope he begins to incorporate them back into his repertoire, along with the new creations. # is also one of the 20 artists selected to participate in the 20Keith exhibition that will be opening on September 11. I’ll be writing more about it soon, but I can tell you, his piece for a show – a painted bicycle – is fantastic.
