Mark Jenkins in Rome
I heard last month that Mark Jenkins would be coming to Rome, which had me quite excited. Yes another world-class street artist is hitting up the Italian capital, and yet again it’s thanks to Wunderkammern, who you may remember hosted Invader in 2010. I’ve been waiting awhile for him to come to town, since if I recall correctly there was a rumor he was going to have a show at CO2 Gallery last year, but that never materialized.
Unfortunately I haven’t been around (either out of the city or at work) in order to photography any of his installations, which have been going up around the city for the past few weeks, but finally managed to get this shot of a new installation on top of the Hotel Roma Æterna in Pigneto.
The funny thing is that I didn’t notice the mannequin “fishing” for that 5th star until I was taking the picture and saw it in the corner of the frame. Genius…that made the whole piece. As a side tidbit, this hotel is on an extremely busy intersection and some guy pulled over in a panic thinking that the mannequin was real. I shouted across the street that it was not real and he gave a “Vaffancullo” to the piece and drove off.
Mark Jenkins will open his Living Layers exhibition at Wunderkammern in Torpignattara this coming Saturday, March 17. On the same night he’ll also be opening a show in Osaka, Japan. During the opening in Rome Mark will be on hand to sign copies of his new monograph, The Urban Theater. The show remains open until April 26, so check it out if you are in town!
